Visit Overview
As part of its official visit to Pakistan (7–11 September 2026), a delegation from Shanghai Pumin Technology Development Co., Ltd., accompanied by the HKH (Pvt) Ltd team, visited Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Islamabad on Tuesday, 08 September 2026. The visit was hosted by the Faculty of Sciences under the framework of the MoU signed between NITB and Shanghai Pumin Technology Development Co., Ltd. on 16 June 2026 in China.
Established in 1974, AIOU is the first open university in Asia and the second in the world. The engagement brought together the University's senior leadership and the visiting delegation for a substantive exchange on digital infrastructure, skills development and pathways for Pakistani youth.
Reception
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood, Vice Chancellor, AIOU, together with Major Raja Umer Younis, TI(M), (Retd), Registrar and Director IET, Prof. Dr. Sher Muhammad, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, and senior members of the University's leadership team. Representatives of the University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJKU) also attended.
Institutional Briefing on AIOU
Dr. Zahid Majeed, Director (AP&CP), briefed the delegation on AIOU's scale and reach: an enrolment of approximately 1.2 million students, a nationwide network of 54 regional centres and campuses, and a comprehensive suite of online and blended distance-learning programmes. He outlined the University's four faculties, its access and inclusion initiatives (including scholarships for students with special needs and education programmes for prisoners), and its growing international collaboration — including Turkish, Russian and Japanese language centres, with German and Chinese centres under discussion.
